Wellbeing Isn’t a Luxury

Wellbeing isn't a luxury - person resting

Somewhere along the way, we started treating wellbeing like a reward. Something to earn once the work is done, the inbox is empty, and everyone else is looked after. A spa day when things calm down. A holiday when the project lands. Self-care “when I have time.”

The trouble is, that moment never arrives.

The myth of “later”

Many of us have been taught that rest is indulgent and that putting ourselves first is selfish. We wear busyness like a badge of honour and tell ourselves we’ll slow down eventually.

But your body and mind keep score. Exhaustion, irritability, brain fog, that low hum of anxiety, the feeling of running on empty: these aren’t signs you’re failing. They’re signals. And when we ignore them long enough, they get louder.

Wellbeing isn’t the cherry on top of a well-lived life. It’s the foundation the whole thing stands on.

Wellbeing is maintenance, not mystery

We don’t consider it a luxury to put fuel in the car or charge our phones. Nobody says, “I’ll charge my phone once I’ve finished using it for the day.” Yet we expect ourselves to keep going, giving to our work, our families and our communities, without refuelling.

Looking after your wellbeing doesn’t have to mean elaborate rituals or expensive retreats (lovely as they can be). Often it looks far simpler:

  • Taking a proper lunch break away from your desk

  • Saying no without writing an essay of apology

  • Getting outside, even for ten minutes

  • Asking for support before you reach breaking point

  • Giving yourself permission to feel what you’re feeling

Small, consistent acts add up. They tell your nervous system that you are safe, that you matter, and that you’re worth caring for.

For business owners and leaders: this is a strategy

If you run a business or lead a team, here’s the part that matters even more: your wellbeing is not separate from your success. It is part of it.

Burnt-out leaders make reactive decisions. Depleted teams lose creativity, motivation and loyalty. The business that runs on exhaustion might look productive for a while, but it’s borrowing against the future.

When you prioritise wellbeing, in yourself and in the people around you, you get clearer thinking, stronger relationships, better retention and work that actually feels sustainable. That isn’t soft. It’s smart.

The most successful people I know aren’t the ones who push through at all costs. They’re the ones who’ve learnt that taking care of themselves is what allows them to keep showing up.

You don’t have to earn it

Here’s what I’d love you to take away: you don’t need to hit a target, reach burnout, or hit rock bottom before you’re “allowed” to look after yourself. You don’t need a good enough reason.

You are allowed to prioritise your wellbeing simply because you are a human being, and because your life is worth living well, not just getting through.

A gentle question to sit with

What is one small thing you could do this week, not once everything’s sorted, but this week, to support your wellbeing?

Start there. Make it small enough that you’ll actually do it. Then do it again.

Because wellbeing isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity. And you’re worth it.
